Podczas fermentacji w\u0119giel obecny w substratach jest rozk\u0142adany na biogaz w czterech fazach. Te cztery fazy dziel\u0105 si\u0119 zasadniczo na hydroliz\u0119 (pierwsza faza), zakwaszenie (druga faza), tworzenie kwasu octowego (trzecia faza) i tworzenie metanu (czwarta faza).<\/p>\n<p>W przeciwie\u0144stwie do kompostowania, kt\u00f3re jest procesem gnilnym, podczas fermentacji nie jest wytwarzane ciep\u0142o, ale powstaje palny gaz metanowy. Ponadto powstaje neutralny dwutlenek w\u0119gla, woda i gazy \u015bladowe, takie jak siarkowod\u00f3r, amoniak, azot pierwiastkowy, wod\u00f3r i tlen.<\/p>\n<p>Zasada fermentacji beztlenowej jest szeroko stosowana. Wyst\u0119puje m.in. w mule morskim, w rzekach i jeziorach, na bagnach i torfowiskach, w nienawodnionych warstwach gleby, na wysypiskach \u015bmieci, w gnojowiskach i szambach, w uprawach ry\u017cu itd.
